Santa Ana winds blow dust indoors

Fire season adds ash. When brush burns in the nearby hills, gray flakes land on patios and window sills, and shoes carry them inside. Ash needs a damp cloth. A dry duster or a broom just lifts it back into the air, and it comes down again on the next surface. Homes in Chevy Chase Canyon and Glenoaks Canyon sit close to the brush and tend to see more of it than the flats near downtown.

Then there is the water. Tap water across this part of the county is hard, and it leaves a white crust on faucets and a cloudy film on shower glass. Left alone, that film builds up and gets harder to remove every month. Summer heat plays a part too. Houses stay shut with the air conditioning on, and the vents and ceiling fans slowly grow a gray coat of dust.
