Ranch houses make up much of Torrance

A big part of Torrance was built after the Second World War, and you can still see it from the street. Rows of single-story ranch houses fill West Torrance, Southeast Torrance and Walteria, many with an attached garage and a sliding door to the patio. The homes near downtown in Old Torrance are older still, with wood floors, tall baseboards and built-in cabinets from the early days of the city.

Everything in a ranch house sits on one floor, which sounds easy until you count the doors. Dirt from the patio and garage comes straight onto the main floor and piles up along the baseboards and in the door tracks. Many homes from that era also have textured or popcorn ceilings, and those catch dust and cobwebs in every corner. Leave those spots for a few months and a house looks tired even right after the floors are mopped.

On a deep clean we work from the top of each room down. Ceiling corners, fan blades and light fixtures get dusted first. Counters, cabinet fronts and baseboards come next, and the floors come last so nothing falls on a clean surface. We vacuum grit out of the sliding door tracks and wipe them down, since that grit wears on the rollers. In the older homes downtown we damp mop wood floors and never soak them.

The marine layer keeps Torrance bathrooms damp

Torrance runs right down to the ocean at Torrance Beach. On many mornings from late spring into summer, a gray marine layer sits over the city. People here call it June gloom. It keeps the air cool and damp. Indoors, that moisture settles where the air does not move, like the corners of a shower and the back of a closet. Homes in the Hollywood Riviera and West Torrance, closest to the water, feel it most.

Damp air and soap film are what mildew needs. It starts as gray or black spots in the grout and along the caulk at the base of a tub. A quick wipe makes it look gone, and then it comes back. Near the beach there is a second problem. Salty air leaves a hazy film on windows and sliding doors, and sand comes in on shoes and beach gear and settles into rugs.

In Torrance bathrooms we scrub the grout and the caulk lines along with the tile, and we dry the surfaces before we leave. We wipe window sills and the tracks under them, where water collects on cool gray mornings. In houses near the water we clean the inside of the glass and vacuum rugs slowly. Sand sinks deep into the pile, and a fast pass leaves most of it behind.

An office gets dirty where people touch things all day. Door handles, light switches, desk phones, shared keyboards and the break room counter get the dirtiest, and a quick tidy usually skips them. A boutique has its own list. Display case glass, fitting room mirrors and the counter by the register show every fingerprint. The entry mat takes the grit off the street, and it is the first thing a customer steps on.
